I have been looking into drinking a non-animal alternative to cows milk. I have read that cow’s milk it isn’t that great for us humans and I wanted a milk that didn’t come from an animal for a change.

Almond milk

Almonds are a great source of magnesium, manganese, selenium (immune system) and vitamin E, which is an antioxidant. Almond milk is a good source of protein and unsaturated fat.

This one is a little too processed/promoted for my liking so if I am going to drink almond milk as a non-animal alternative to cows milk I am going to have to make it myself. There are plenty of recipes on the internet and thanks to the omega juicer that I have I will be able to use it to juice nuts.

Cashew Milk

If you are wondering where you will get your calcium from if you ditch cow’s milk well cashew milk is one great source. Full of magnesium (good for keeping our bones strong). Natural Juice Junkie has a great recipe for cashew cinnamon milk here.

You can also try hazelnut and walnut milk too.

Coconut milk

Coconut milk is my favorite non-animal alternative to cows milk. Creamy, dairy-free (which is great because I am trying to give up dairy), great if you are allergic to animal milk or lactose intolerant. Gluten free, soya free, cholesterol free and nut-free coconut milk is the best option for me. Easily available in shops and great to taste.

I love it in my porridge, especially now I make porridge with water.

Don’t worry about the fat content of coconut milk because it is considered to be ‘good-fat’ that our body needs and can turn into energy quickly so it isn’t stored as fat.

Hemp Milk

I can only find this in health food shops and I find it creamier than rice milk and a little thicker. Its a great alternative if you have a soya or nut allergy. Excellent source of protein. I only ever bought this once.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is lactose free and contains high levels of vitamin E. It also contains folic acid and is a good source of phytochemicals (a naturally occurring chemical in plants that is great for helping to fight major diseases). Like rice milk it is also high in sugar and not great if you are giving up gluten.

Potato Milk

Potato milk is usually sold in powder form. You mix it with water to create a milk. It is great for vegans and gluten free. For people who suffer with severe food allergies potato milk is a great substitue for cows milk. Great source of Vitamins D and B12. You can also use it in recipes.I haven’t actually managed to find potato milk powder in the UK yet.

Quinoa Milk

100% vegetal. Soya, lactose and cholesterol free and usually including agave syrup quinoa milk can make a great alternative to animal milk. It can be used in tea, coffee and baking plus it is available as an organic product. It is one of the more expensive alternatives that I looked at but you can make your own.

Rice Milk

There are loads of nutrients in rice milk that are good for our heart. It has a high magnesium content (blood presure), iron, and copper. It is high in sugar though because of the starch component to rice so not great for those of us wanting to lower our sugar intake.

Watch out for sugar

To help make these alternative to cows milk palatable you might find that the off-the-shelf kind is ladened with sugar so its important to check the ingredients.

The easiest way to get used to drinking these is to not expect the creamy texture or the flavour of milk, they may be white in colour but that is about all they have in common with their animal counterparts.

If you have ever tried to give up meat sausages for vegetarian ones you will appreciate what I am saying here. They may look similar but they will taste very, very different.

The best way to enjoy a non-animal alternative to cows milk is to make it yourself from scratch.
