I have a dream. Famous words. They were said because there is power in the pursuit of your dream. Those words mean something to me because I have a dream – well two dreams actually.

They are not dreams as ambitious or life changing as Dr King but they are important to my personal and professional life. The one I wanted to share today is my professional dream:

To help women live their dream and make things happen

The women I work with have a dream too. A dream that is important to their life. Several years ago I worked with someone who wanted to act and she was stuck in a job she hated instead. I

watched as she made things happen after my initial coaching.

That is the thing about life coaching. It is a great tool to help you get started and pursue your dream but at some point you need to take responsibility for taking action and making your dream come to life.

However, at the beginning if you are unsure about what you want to do or how to start life coaching can make the difference between you taking action or forever talking about your dream but never doing anything about it.

Anyway, her dream became a reality and I went to see her acting in a one-woman show in a local theater.

I didn’t know it then but it triggered something in me to want to help other women to live their dream.

That is one of the reasons by book on self-confidence focuses on helping women do more than become confident, it focuses on you building self-confidence by pursuing your dream.

Another woman who was a neighbor of mine wanted to swim with dolphins.

I became her life coach.

As she was in her mid 50s and a divorce had left her with some money that was quickly being eaten away by living expenses and paying rent she thought it might be too late. We worked out finances and when she got as close as booking her plane tickets she backed out.

That’s the thing about dreams – sometimes knowing you might actually achieve them can be a scary thing. What will you focus on next?

What will you have to talk about wanting to do with all your friends if you actually get round to doing it?

She moved away so I never found out if she finally got to swim with dolphins but I really hope that she did.

Pursuing your dream builds inner strength

The act of working towards a desire you want builds an inner strength within you that then helps you build self-confidence.

Rather than working on becoming self-confident before you work towards your goal you use taking action and working towards your goal and being in pursuit of your dream as the tools to help you build your self-confidence.

The success you experience along the way as you take one step and then another step closer is amazing. Nothing beats it (IMHO) for helping you grow stronger as a person.

As Les Brown says in the quote below – going after your dream will give you power that you don’t even know you have.

“Get centered and calm yourself down. An anxious mind can’t take you where you need to go. Recognize that true power resides within you ~ never outside of you. Keep your eyes on the prize, and don’t allow yourself to be thrown off course. There is power in the pursuit of your dream. Continue to go after your dream…regardless of the obstacles, rejection, or things that will be thrown into your path. Go around, go through, or leap over them, and remind yourself of what this dream really means to you. Going after your dream will give you power that you don’t even know that you have. Embrace the challenges because they build character, resiliency, and faith. You were born to succeed. It’s not over until you win! You have GREATNESS within you!” – Les Brown.

Stay calm and be patient

Oprah had the idea of running her own network back in the early 1990s and the OWN network finally began in January 2011 – it took several years despite the fact that Oprah is a big name in television.

If you think about getting a job at age 21. All your education from the age of five right up until you leave college goes into you then getting a job. Your result at the end of your education determines what type of job you get. That is over 15 years of education to achieve the pursuit of your dream called ‘getting a job’

Famous writers and actors talk about how long it took them to ‘make it’ as they worked hard and worked towards their goal.

The one thing you definitely need is to have patience, especially if things are not going your way, and never give up.

As I work towards getting everything together that I need so that I can publish my book I remind myself that this journey is worth going on because at the end of it I will have accomplished something amazing.

Even if I only end up selling one book I will have achieved a childhood dream of writing and publishing my own work.

“The highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it.”
